Hieron II, tyrant and then king of Syracuse, Sicily from 270 to 216/215 BCE. He was also the legitimate son of Syracusan noble, Hierocles. He strengthened his position by marrying the daughter of Leptines. Mamertines a body of Campanian mercenaries who had been employed by Agathocles, had seized the stronghold of Messina, and proceeded in harassing the Syracusans.
