  • Obverse: Depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to mark George Washington’s 200th birthday. A recommended design for the 1932 quarter, then-Treasury Secretary Mellon ultimately selected the familiar John Flanagan design.
  • Reverse: Features Dr. Maya Angelou, the first African American woman to appear on a U.S. quarter. Her memoir, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, brought her worldwide acclaim. Dr. Angelou's lifelong support of Civil Rights included work for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She was the first African American and woman to write and present a poem at an inauguration, for President Bill Clinton in 1992.
