The North American Buffalo, otherwise known as the bison, is a symbol of the Old West. It was the mainstay of life for the plains Indians who hunted this animal for food, clothing, and tools. Almost no part of the buffalo went to waste. Their horns and hides were often used for regalia and religious artifacts, and they are viewed as symbols of honor and generosity. To honor the personality of the bison comes this coin, the third and final release in the Spirit Animal Series featuring designs created by Colorado-based artist Phil Lewis. The design is so intriguing and steeped in imagery that even if you aren’t a fan of the buffalo, you’ll want to charge ahead and get your hands on one of these coins before they’re all gone!
Phil Lewis, the artist behind this incredible design, believes “living in harmony with the earth is the path to kindness, strength, respect, and prosperity.” No animal embodies this idea more beautifully than the magnificent Bison. The bison’s gentle and trusting spirit represents a deep connection to the earth, as well as a gratitude for all the universe provides. Unfortunately, history has shown that mankind’s relationship with the bison has not always been so harmonious. When the first European settlers arrived, they decimated the bison population through unsustainable hunting practices and habitat destruction. Thankfully, through recent efforts in conservation and sustainability, the bison populations across North America are making a comeback.
