Issued on behalf of Sierra Leone, this coin is produced in magnificent fine gold, which really shows the power of the animal and illustrates the appeal of these cats.
The animal depicted on this release of the Big Cats Series is a panther, but the panther is not a recognized species unto itself. Instead, panther is a term often applied to the black panther. A black panther is actually a leopard or jaguar, depending on the region of the world, with a color variation to its fur that renders an all-black colorization. Leopards with black colorization are found in Asia and Africa, while jaguars with this colorization are found in the Americas.
A black panther is the melanistic color variant of any Panthera. It is believed that melanism allows for a selective advantage in Panthers; this is because it has been found to be more common in certain conditions such as dense forests, where the light levels are much lower.
The coin has been produced in a stunning half gram fine gold. The third Big Cat gold coin features the head of a panther with the word “PANTHER” incused and the words “BIG CATS” raised. As with the other coins in the “Big Cat” series, the denomination for the “Big Cats” is on the obverse of the coin.
Only 199 half gram Big Cat gold panther coins will be struck.
