La Demajagua is the name of the property owned by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes; a plantation and sugar cane processing complex. On October 1868, Céspedes started a revolution, freeing his slaves and inviting them to join the movement. In the same month, installations and plantations were destroyed by Spanish forces, partly as revenge to Céspedes. Debris of the factory was left on the ground, and a jagüey tree grew thru a big gear wheel, as shown on the main image of obverse.
This fact was taken as a symbol of the determination of Cubans to face annoyances and rise again and stronger.
