The Maccabees, also spelled Machabees, were a group of Jewish rebel warriors who took control of Judea, which at the time was part of the Seleucid Empire. They founded the Hasmonean dynasty, which ruled from 167 BCE to 37 BCE, being a fully independent kingdom from about 110 to 63 BCE. They reasserted the Jewish religion, partly by forced conversion, expanded the boundaries of Judea by conquest, and reduced the influence of Hellenism and Hellenistic Judaism.
The Widow's Mite is a desirable piece from antiquity, because of its mention in the Old Testament. In the story of the Poor Widow, it was said that while preaching in the temple, Jesus watched rich men put pieces of silver into the collection bin. Then he saw an old woman deposit two "mites." He observes that "this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood."
