Romanian Quartz
Cavnic Mine (Kapnikbánya)
Maramures Co., Romania (closed in 2008)
This is one of the most beautiful samples you could ever own!
With the base structure of Quartz which grew to great size then acquired a blanket, or coating of Dolomite on the upper portion of the structure. The Dolomite was then lightly dusted with Pyrite crystals that are mere millimeters in size at their LARGEST, most are microscopic in size.
The coloration of the quartz is likely not natural, while still being debated, the majority believe that the samples are artificially irradiated to give color to the crystals. It's believed that natural occurring smokey quartz has been exposed to rare radioactive materials that would result in the same outcome. Quartz, when struck with radiation will change color and after a heating process it will retain the color.
