American Indians have been contributing to the success of space flight since its beginning. As example the multiple spacewalks of John Herrington (Chickasaw) on the International Space Station in 2002. Also the work of Mary Golda Ross (Cherokee), who helped develop the Agena spacecraft for the Gemini and Apollo Programs was one of the first female American Indian engineers.
