Five official coins were issued for the kingdom of Hawaii. These include the 1847 cent issued by Kind Kamehameha III and the 1883 silver dimes, quartes, halves, and dollars of King Kalakaua I, which bear his portrait. The silver pieces were all designed by Charles Barber and struck at the San Francisco Mint. After Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900, the legal-tender status of these coins was removed and most were withdrawn and melted. (2017 Redbook, 420)
