Fugio copper was the first coins issued by the authority of the United States. Interesting information about the proceedings relating to this coinage may be found in the Journal of Congress.

On one side of the minted coin, a small circle with the words 'United States' around it and in the centre the words 'We Are One'; on the other side, a dial with the hours expressed on the face; a meridian sun above on one side of which is the word fugio, meaning time flies, on the other is the year '1787' in figures; below th dial are the words 'Mind Your Business'.

"The legends have been credited to Benjamin Franklin, and the coin, as a consequence, has sometimes been referred to as the Franklin cent."

"These pieces were coined in New Haven, Connecticut. Most of the copper used in this coinage came from military stores or salvaged metal. The Dies were made by Abel Buell of New Haven."
